According to the Guinness World Records, the world’s oldest living dog is a 23-year-old Chihuahua mix in Ohio.

Spike, who was 23 years and 43 days old on Dec. 7, 2022, is approximately 9 inches tall and 12.9 pounds. 

His owner, Rita Kimball, found him in the parking lot of a Camden, Ohio, grocery store over 13 years ago. He was believed to be 10 years old at the time.

“He had been shaved up his back, had blood stains around his neck from a chain or rope, and looked pretty rough,” Kimball told GWR. “The clerk in the grocery told us he had been there for three days, and they were feeding him scraps.”

When her family left the store and entered the parking lot, Kimball said Spike followed them. Not knowing who he belonged to, she decided to give him a home on her small farm.

The Chihuahua’s name was inspired by a cartoon dog known for its large size and aggressive disposition. Kimball said even though her Spike is small and friendly, he does have the attitude of a big dog.

She said the only time he acts in stereotypical Chihuahua fashion is when he is pet by a stranger.

“He is friendly but since he’s almost blind and hard of hearing, he gets testy at times and just wants to be left alone,” she said.

Kimball attributes her pup’s long life to having a “solid routine,” a healthy diet, room to roam, daily exercise, and unlimited love and attention.

She said Spike starts his day between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. – sometimes he likes to eat breakfast immediately, and sometimes he doesn’t. He spends some time visiting the cows, horses and barn cats in the family’s barn before going back to the house for a nap on the porch in preparation for the day.

On the weekends during summer, Rita will take him on walks through their rural hometown.

“There’s always something to do on a farm; we cut wood, clean out fence rows, bale hay and harvest crops,” she said, adding that Spike ends a long work week with a bath on Saturday evening.

Kimball said Spike occasionally enjoys braunschweiger with cheese for dinner and sometimes indulges in his favorite chips, Doritos.

Some of his favorite hobbies are napping and playing with the house cat. He also enjoys hiding his toy fox around the house.

Kimball contacted Guinness World Records after seeing the former oldest living dog, Pebbles, on an episode of “Jimmy Fallon” and realizing her pup was older. Pebbles died in October 2022 at 22-years-old.

“Most of our family knew that Spike was old but didn’t know he had a shot at being the oldest in the world,” Kimball said. “Now that he is a record holder, they see him as a celebrity.”

Well, I didn’t have a working speedometer in my stock 1968 VW Beetle when I was 16, but I estimate that it went 250 MPH. Guinness, please go ahead and record that for me.

I was thinking the same thing, the dog could have been 2 years old when they found it and it just looks older.

Thought to be 10 years old when found in a parking lot? Pretty vague pedigree for a world record claim.

A good vet can usually tell age fairly close – soft life or hard life. – but I agree it’s unusual for Guinness to actually put it in the record books with no proof.

Wait a second here. They “found him in a parking lot 13 years ago”? He was “believed to be 10 at the time”? Sorry, I don’t think that qualifies. We had a dog under similar circumstances but we assumed that they misjudged his original age. We had “Cruiser” for 12 years and they told us they thought he was 8 when we adopted him.

I think that’s a ruff estimate …

Wait…they are basing this on an estimate that when they found the dog he “appeared to be ten years old”?

Another institution deflated. I used to marvel reading their annual book of records as a child, now it’s just another joke, ever since their reality show.

Well this plummeted Guinness’ reputation. The dog’s age was estimated when it was found 13 years ago? Yea that’s accurate and acceptable. 🙄

Back in Vietnam fifty years ago, Guinness World Records awarded a dog’s owner a certificate for the oldest dog in that country. The dog was three.

When I was a kid my great aunt had a Chihuahua named Twenty. After his twentieth birthday she renamed him every year. When he died his name was Twentyfive.

Our cat is 24 years old, has been in the family the entire time, my wife is the third sister to own her. It out lived the other sisters.

So now we’re basing records on guesses or what? Vets can estimate how old a dog is but they can’t say yep, this dog is ten years old. Now if they can say we’re 100 percent certain he’s OVER ten years old but we’re not sure how much over, that would make sense, but I don’t think they can say that for sure

The dog identifies as being 23, so everyone else must acknowledge and affirm it is true. That’s the world we live in now.

Spike has more energy than Biden does. Undoubtedly smarter too.

Don’t know how Guinness can certify this right down to the day/birthday, when the dog was found…no way to actually determine its age and DOB…!

“Believed to be 10 years old, at the time”, is an assumption, not a fact. Sorry, that should not be good enough to base a world record.

Let me see if I’ve got this straight. A dog, who is exactly 23 years and 43 days old, based on his birthday of December 7th, was found in a parking lot and assumed to be around 10 years old? Boosts Guiness’ credibility!

How do you win the oldest dog when you do not know how old a dog is? If she had a paper from the day he was born then I could say sure he wins but guessing he was 10 when really he was just abused make no sense. This is like the 2020 election adding on 10 years then calling him old.

Zero proof this dog is that old.

How can you give a “world record” based on an estimate of how old he is? Guinness Book just lost what little credibility they had.

This is absolutely ridiculous, there are lots of dogs much older – Joy Behar has to be in her late 70s!

To try and answer what many of us are wondering: This is from an Instagram post.

“Spike’s age is based on a range of evidence, including documents from several veterinarians, who all estimated the same approximate date of birth between July and November of 1999 for Spike. This was based on his medical condition, including his teeth and eyes.” So, it is a guess based on the latest date they estimated.

How can this record be bestowed when they don’t know the dog’s exact birthday? Sounds like some favoritism going on here.

We have an ancient dog named Brandon. He is 187 and lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

I apparently had the oldest cat. We guessed he was about 20 when he knocked on the front door. Based on that he lived to be almost 40. Just a guess.

My two dogs “Identify” as 72 and 31,,,, oh they are Democrats too!

They were unable to confirm his exact age as his birth certificate was in Bidens garage with other “important papers” and things have since been compromised.

Vets have a way of estimating a dog’s age. I think they cut off one of its legs and count the calcium rings of its tibia or radius. 😂🤣

They can’t. You can take them to the vet who can give you a RANGE based on teeth, bones, etc. but the vet can also be WAY off.
