The Far Side – part 2

Odd Ducks and Common Loons

My cmnt:I disagree with Larson here. Staking out one’s territory is a good idea. Good fences make good neighbors.

My cmnt: While this is funny Larson displays his 19th century view of God and reality. Larson seems to believe that space/time-matter/energy constitute the whole of reality. The immaterial aspect of reality is the only part that makes life worth living. If faith, hope & love; goodness, beauty and truth – do not exist then all that we hold most dear are mere fantasies and this existence, an accident of neoDarwinism, is meaningless and pointless and suicide right now is the best option.

My cmnt: Gary should stay out of questions about Darwinism, the environment and God, as he is simply echoing Leftist ideas and appears to have no clue what he is talking about. Stick with being funny and ironic and leave politics to the editorial page. Your lane is the funny pages. Stay there.

My cmnt: Larson miscaptioned this one. It’s 1987 and men don’t yet get manicures (as they do in 2025) and so obviously Larson, with no personal knowledge, simply considers all such activity as a “manicure”. This should be called a mani-pedi since the pirate is humorously getting his peg leg treated along with his hook hand. Or even better would have been the caption “A day at the Pirate Spa”. Also better would have been a depiction of the wooden leg being treated with some sort of preservative or nail polish or maybe filing off the rough edges or such instead of being sawed on.

My cmnt: Not really funny. I think Larson is making a mild reference to the book “Where the Wild Things Are”.

My cmnt: Below Larson makes fun of Global Warming ….

Hell and Satan humor – part 1

My cmnt: When Larson gets political he stops being funny. He’s definitely someone who voted for Clinton.

My cmnt: I’m from Nebraska and have been to Mayfield and Larson’s absolutely correct. However I would be remiss to fail to note that there are whole, large areas of San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Hollywood (to name a few) where the sun also never shines.

My cmnt: Below a very early (1980) Larson cartoon. Always interesting to see how a cartoonist’s artwork evolves over time.

Hell and Satan humor – part 2

Same cartoon used twice with slightly different desks

Here Larson chickened out. They didn’t sacrifice a goat, it was a young, virgin girl thrown into the volcano.

The Underground Catacombs of L.A.’s Lizard People

Elon Musk didn’t invent the idea of drilling holes into Los Angeles. George Warren Shufelt did it first.

Insect and bug humor

Common farm animal humor (cows, chickens, pigs)

Gary Larson leans Left in his political and anti-Christian humor

My cmnt: While Larson is a very clever humorous and cartoonist, like so many in the entertainment industry, he’s not as smart nor as informed as he would like to think. Iran-Contra was a made-up scandal in an attempt by the democrat-media industrial complex to harm President Reagan and help out the communists as usual.

My cmnt: The cartoon below is actually an apt description or depiction of Darwinian evolution. The alleged evolution of biological creatures is mostly a tale of Just-So stories that neither the fossil record nor scientific evidence supports. Check the posts on this site under the category “Darwinism” to see more on this subject.

My cmnt: Tho’ Larson is not Jewish he often took a Jewish (as an unbeliever) view of God’s relationship to His creation and His Chosen People. A lot of the Jewish comedian’s humor is their view that God is out to get them.

My cmnt: Larson again makes no attempt to understand what “The fear of the Lord” really means and reduces it to paganism. The cartoon is still funny.

My cmnt: There are sufficiently sarcastic sentiments recorded in the Holy Scriptures (The Israelites asked, “Were there no graves in Egypt that He brought us out here to die in the wilderness? “Ex 14:11) that it is not necessary to mock the Shroud of Turin as it indeed MAY be the burial shroud of Christ.

My cmnt: Not at all certain what Larson is driving at here. Perhaps Adam & Eve keep eating apples after the first forbidden fruit? Larson does not understand Biblical Christianity at all – so who knows?

My cmnt: The Christian “fish” symbol (ichthys is the Greek word for fish) on the back of the flying saucer “car” bumper is a little funny but again Larson has no real understanding of Christianity nor its doctrines.

How times have changed!! The Far Side would be boycotted and hounded out of the many Lib newspapers it ran in in 1990 if it ran this cartoon today. Homosexuality and cross-dressing have been sources of humor since the ancient Greeks. This is because they are a type of mental illness or deficiency that strikes the vast majority of people as preposterous and ridiculous and therefore funny.
