P-nut, also known as Peanut, was a male eastern gray squirrel who gained social media fame after being rescued as a kit in 2017 by Mark Longo. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) seized Peanut in late October 2024 after receiving complaints about illegally kept wildlife. Tragically, Peanut was euthanized for rabies testing, which ultimately yielded negative results. His death sparked public outcry and led to the introduction of a bill aimed at preventing similar incidents.
