My cmnt: A good friend of mine, who was also my barber, had his life ruined by an illegal immigrant, also drunk, who ran him over while he was riding his bicycle. This was many years ago and long before “Sarah’s Law”. All the lives ruined, the untold billions of dollars of taxpayer money, the filling of our jails and prisons (also at great expense to the taxpayer), the over burdening of all of our social support systems designed for our own citizens, the illegal voting – all of these completely unnecessary problems are laid at the feet of every democrat voter and politician and judge who created and maintains this disaster to this day. Shame on you. Unlike the farce of Global Warming this is actually happening and IS an existential threat to our country.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Eswin Mejia — the man charged in connection to a 2016 crash that killed 21-year-old Sarah Root — appeared in court Monday for the first time since he bonded out of jail and spent nearly a decade on the run.

Mejia, 28, was formally charged in Douglas County with one count of motor vehicle homicide-DUI and one count of failure to appear in court. His bond is set at $100 million.

On Jan. 31, 2016, Mejia, an illegal immigrant, was accused of street racing while under the influence of alcohol when he struck Root’s vehicle near 33rd and L Street in Omaha. His blood alcohol level was three-times the legal limit. Root, who was from Council Bluffs, died at the scene. She had graduated college that same day.

Five days later, on Feb. 4, 2016, Mejia was formally charged with motor vehicle homicide-DUI, and his bond was set at $50,000. The next day, he posted the required 10 percent of his bond and was released from jail after signing a document promising to abide by several stipulations — which ordered him to stay within 10 miles of Douglas County, report twice daily for alcohol testing, and participate in a 24/7 random drug testing program.

On Feb. 9, 2016, a bench warrant was issued for Mejia’s arrest after he skipped a drug test. A few weeks later, on Feb. 26, a judge added a charge of failure to appear when Mejia, who was 19 at the time, no-showed his preliminary hearing.

On Feb. 27, 2025, Honduran National Police announced on social media that Mejia had been captured in Honduras. Authorities extradited him back to the United States on Friday.

He was on the run for almost nine years to the day.

The fact that Mejia was able to bond out and subsequently flee the U.S. led Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) to create “Sarah’s Law,” named after Root, which requires illegal immigrants who have committed violent crimes against Americans to be detained regardless of bail status.

President Donald Trump signed Sarah’s Law into law as an amendment to the Laken Riley Act in January 2025 — more than eight years after the legislation was initially introduced.

The very law named after Sarah Root now applies to the suspect arrested in connection to her death.

Judges are only given the option to deny bond for people charged with first-degree murder or first-degree sexual assault, but to post bail this time, Mejia would need to pay 10 percent of his $100 million bond. Even if he somehow came up with $10 million to get out of Douglas County Jail, the passage of Sarah’s Law would require federal authorities to detain him immediately.

Ultimately, Mejia told the judge in court Monday that he doesn’t have the money to post bail. His next court appearance in scheduled or April 29.

My cmnt: And here is yet another illegal immigrant living off the taxpayer, going to jail to further live off the taxpayer, who is already a criminal for entering our country illegally, and was welcomed by Biden and all the democrats who voted for the dementia laden crypt keeper. Have you no shame?
