Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project is a futuristic fable about the downfall of the American Empire…a 40-year endeavor that turns out to be illogical and incoherent.

The allegedly advanced gobbledygook handed out here obviously pales in comparison to the delicious gobagool that Coppola served up in legendary films such as his first two “Godfather” deliveries.

There is but one hope that can finally bring us together as a species: the fact that absolutely nobody in their right, sane mind can make heads or tails as to whatever in the hell Megalopolis is trying to do.

Coppola delivers a grandiose spectacle, unfortunately without the substance. However, when Shia LeBeouf and Aubrey Plaza appear, they bring life to the movie as provocateurs and comic relief.

It is a deeply indulgent work with a premise and perspective nobody was asking for. It also contains moments of staggering vision that you could probably only try if you self-financed a film for $120 million and nobody could tell you “no.”

While one can appreciate the ambition and Coppola’s desire to swing for the fences, Megalopolis is ultimately an infield pop up at best, an overstuffed saga with moments of potential smothered by waves of pretentiousness.

“Megalopolis” is an experience more than it’s a movie, and as an experience, it’s unforgettable.

What makes the movie entertaining is a lack of self-awareness. It’s earnestly singular, attempting to say something prescient and insightful to docile filmgoers fed conventionality.

If you ever wondered what it would have been like to see Fritz Lang’s Metropolis or D.W. Griffith’s Intolerance when they first came out, Megalopolis offers you a glimpse to the past. It’s a mess, but a fascinating one. [Full Review in Spanish]

Megalopolis is the sci-fi movie equivalent of CATS.

The world Coppola conjures, messily ridden with more ideas that he and his collaborators can quite keep a lid on, is rich and inspired nonetheless.

I kind of hated this movie, and I also kind of loved it… A half-hour or so in, I was starting to squirm, thinking this could be a really punishing disaster. Very gradually, however, a story begins to take shape that we can invest in.

This puzzling film, in the tradition of the Roman Colosseum, will leave you longing for less circus and more bread.

The film alternates between looking like a generic car commercial and an art deco sci-fi fantasy. The dialogue is either cartoonishly overwrought or hilariously lowbrow, and the film swings wildly between these various poles at a dizzying pace.

My thoughts on Megalopolis can be summed up with a Dorian Corey quote, “shade is I don’t tell you you’re ugly, but I don’t have to tell you because you know you’re ugly.”

It’s wonderful to see Coppola experimenting with film. While The Hunger Games is for young adults, Megalopolis expands on a lot of the same themes but for grown ups. More like going to a modern art exhibit than the movie theater, which is thrilling.

As the images split, dissolve, and accumulate, one glimpses the true multiplicity of Megalopolis: not the sleek epiphany it wishes to cast off, but the beleaguered dog of a half century of ink, sweat, and tears.

Dramatically and philosophically speaking, Megalopolis barely coheres. It seems unrealized even in its unlikely realization, still more of a glowing idea of a movie than the movie itself.
