My cmnt: Democrats have long been the party of the upper crust elites and the government-dependent poor. What they also used to have were the factory union people. As the non-governmental union workers have declined dramatically the democrats have shifted away from pretending to care about these people. To replenish their ranks they have dramatically increased the number of taxpayer dependent civic union workers (i.e., non-productive, bureaucratic workers (i.e., the DMV, the TSA, and just in general most of the city, county, state and federal employees needed to justify and staff the bloated governmental bureaucracy).
